About the Data
Campground locations are sourced from the Recreation Information Database (RIDB), maintained by the US Department of the Interior. RIDB aggregates facility data from the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and other federal agencies. The dataset covers over 4,500 campgrounds with verified geographic coordinates across all 50 states.
Federal Land Agencies
Each campground on this map is color-coded by the federal agency that manages it:
- National Park Service (NPS) — Campgrounds within national parks, monuments, seashores, and recreation areas. Often require advance reservations, especially in peak season.
- US Forest Service (USFS) — Campgrounds in national forests and grasslands. Ranges from full-service developed sites to primitive dispersed camping areas.
- Bureau of Land Management (BLM) — Campgrounds on BLM-administered land, primarily in the western US. Many are first-come, first-served with minimal facilities.
- Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) — Campgrounds at reservoirs and waterways managed by the Corps. Popular for fishing and water-based recreation.
- Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) — Campgrounds at federal water projects, concentrated in western states.
- US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) — Limited camping on National Wildlife Refuges where permitted by refuge management plans.
