South Dakota Elevation Overview

South Dakota’s Black Hills rise dramatically from the surrounding Great Plains. Black Elk Peak at 7,242 ft is the highest point in the US east of the Rockies. The Badlands in the southwest feature eroded buttes, pinnacles, and ancient fossil beds. The rest of the state is rolling Great Plains broken by the Missouri River valley.
