North Carolina Elevation Overview

North Carolina contains the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Mount Mitchell at 6,684 ft anchors the Black Mountains in the southern Appalachians. The state descends through the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain to the Outer Banks barrier islands. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
