The Opportunity
Abt is seeking an experienced statistician with advanced analytic and programming skills to join its growing team in the Digital and Data Services (DDS) Division. This division plays a key role within Abt providing data science methods, data visualization, statistical consulting, and advanced analytics to a broad range of government agencies, university researchers, foundations, and corporations. Much of their work is focused on public policy, evaluation, and data modernization in such areas as the environment, health policy, epidemiology, education, food safety, urban planning, and public opinion, both within the US and internationally.
The statistician works with internal and external clients on the valid and reliable applications of primary and secondary data, with a special focus on Bayesian methods, to answer complex technical questions. They will perform work with data and perform advanced analyses such as statistical modeling, complex estimation, and blending of data sources. The statistician will work across all US federal agencies with specifical applications in Bayesian analyses, multilevel and hierarchical modeling, complex Monte Carlo simulation, and geospatial analyses. In addition, the successful candidate will independently and collaboratively develop analysis plans, communicate the strength and weaknesses of various analyses, and identify and apply appropriate analytic techniques across a range of data types.
The selected candidate must be an expert at analytic programming, with preference given to experience with R and/or Python. The preferred candidate demonstrates a track record of leading and mentoring others in the creation of novel packages and implementation in complex settings. They will also provide mentoring and guidance to more junior staff to help grow the expertise; and represents Abt at research and professional association conferences (e.g., the Joint Statistical Meetings).
The Statistician can work on-site in Abts offices in any of Atlanta, GA, Cambridge, MA, Durham, NC, or Rockville, MD. High quality remote only candidates will also be considered.
Core Responsibilities
The successful hire will be able to perform the following functions:

Lead study design and statistical methodology sections of proposals
Conduct power analyses to determine required sample sizes
Provide thought leadership through statistical & data science research
Communicate technical aspects of sampling, analysis, and statistical models to internal and external clients
Work to create re-usable analytic tools either with directly with software developers or individually through the creation of new open source packages
Analyze and model structured data using advanced statistical methods (e.g. classification, regression, validation, inference, etc.)
Collaborate across divisions/departments to support data modeling and visualizations
Must have proven technical expertise with both applied and theoretical work. This can be through publications, white papers, conference presentations, GitHub repositories, and/or software packages.
Successful candidate needs to have demonstrated experience working with large and/or complex datasets.

What We Value

Masters Degree + Seven years of relevant experience, or PhD + Four years of relevant experience
Ph.D. in statistics, quantitative survey methodology, or related field.
Experience in writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to discuss analytic topics with lay audiences of different levels of analytic sophistication
Demonstrated ability to conduct methodological research
Preference given to applicants with complementary expertise in additional areas of statistics and data science, including, but not limited to, spatial analysis, mixed models, missing data, machine learning, natural language processing, econometrics, latent variable modeling, latent class analysis, or other quantitative social science areas

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately$91,408.75 to$146,254.01 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
