Position Summary
The University of New Mexico Center for Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) provides data-driven research and analysis to support improved public decision making. As experts on New Mexico population dynamics, we collaborate with researchers across UNM and New Mexico state agencies on a range of projects related to demography and population health. We supply trustworthy information that serves communities and government agencies as population statistics are fundamental building blocks for policy and decision analytics.
We are seeking a Senior Research Scientist 1 who, working under general supervision, will be responsible for demographic analyses on population dynamics and health research. This position requires working independently or in collaboration with other researchers within GPS and the broader UNM community.
The Senior Research Scientist 1 will assist with GPSs responsibilities as the demography office for the State of New Mexico and as New Mexicos demographic liaison the US Census Bureau. This will include tasks such as contributing to the production of GPSs population estimates and projections, evaluating Census Data products, assessing the impact of disclosure avoidance methods on the quality and utility of New Mexicos population data, and/or building and managing spatial databases.
As a research center, GPS has a strong history of supporting staff in their professional development and provides flexibility to researchers to pursue their own research interests within the scope of GPSs mission (i.e. population dynamics and/or population health, broadly speaking). GPS also maintains a flexible work environment with staff able to work partially from home, provided the alternative work environment is within New Mexico. Please see UNMs remote and telework policy for more information.
