About Indigo

Indigo Ag is a mission-driven company dedicated to harnessing nature to help farmers sustainably feed the planet. We innovate across a breadth of technology and science disciplines to help enhance agriculture’s long-term sustainability and profitability and mitigate the climate crisis. We seek to positively impact the world through the digital and biological solutions we bring to the market, creating a more resilient earth, healthier economies, and thriving communities. Our people build partnerships, explore the science, and engineer the technology to help grow the future of sustainable agriculture. The only way to achieve it is through a unique combination of expertise from Fortune 500 to academia, soil science and agriculture, to tech start-ups.

About the role:

The Sustainability Science & Modeling team connects cutting edge science and research with quantification methodologies at scale through deeply cross disciplinary work. We define the science requirements behind high-quality carbon credits, collaborate with scientists across academia and industry, and work on world class data sets and experiments to advance the science around sustainability and agriculture. We are looking for a Scientist to serve as an analytical expert to support quantification integrity. This role is part of our Sustainability Sciences team, which develops the scientific foundation that our technology platform and tools are based on.

Our team works with experts in software engineering, policy, agronomy, design, product, and data science to help farmers get paid for sustainable practices, for example creating credits for practice changes that draws carbon from the air into the soil and reduces emissions (often called Carbon Farming or regenerative agriculture).

In order to quantify impact rigorously and cost effectively we collect data on farming practices, remote sensing, and other data sources that we combine with direct measurement data to model and analyze GHG and soil carbon outcomes and other sustainability attributes. We are using science, agriculture, data, technology, and software engineering to fight climate change and support grower success when making sustainability-driven decisions.

As a Scientist at Indigo you will

Provide modeling and scientific support for reporting periods and verifications to deliver high-quality carbon credits
Interpret and analyze model performance
Manage and improve crop and other model parameterizations
Contribute to the development and advancement of DayCent-CR
Collaborate with engineers on scale issues and building code that can be deployed into production systems.
Support and enhance a team culture that values inquiry, rigor, and care for each other

You might be a good fit if you:

Are an expert in ecosystem modeling and have a track record of intellectual contributions (Masters in ecosystem science, soil science, agricultural science or a related discipline providing experience in biogeochemical modeling and 1+ years of experience working in a professional environment)
Have experience in one or more soil biogeochemical models (DayCent, DNDC, RothC, etc.)
Are familiar with geospatial analysis, modeling and software tools
Care about scientific communication and can translate results from complex analyses into interpretable results, both visually and verbally
Write well-documented, clean, maintainable code in a collaborative environment
Are self-directed and use time efficiently
Are detail-oriented, and like to get the system working but know when perfection is becoming the enemy of good enough
Enjoy collaborating across multiple disciplines, including science, product, design, engineering and data science
Know how to communicate in a remote-first environment
Have worked with modern web technologies and project management software (e.g., Jira, Confluence); familiarity or experience with Agile systems and matrixed organizations is a plus
