Taylor Geospatial Institute Cluster Hiring Initiative

In April 2022, Saint Louis University (SLU) launched the

Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI)

the nations leading geospatial research collaborative, comprising eight of the Midwests outstanding research institutions. The TGI is led by Saint Louis University and includes the Danforth Plant Science Center, Harris-Stowe State University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of MissouriColumbia, University of MissouriSt. Louis, and Washington University in St. Louis. TGIs vision is to be the nations leader in geospatial science research and accelerate the St. Louis regions development as a global geospatial center of excellence. We are harnessing the power of partnership with industry, government agencies, and research entities to grow talent and develop core geospatial science and adjacent fields that enable positive impacts on some of the worlds greatest challenges including food systems, geospatial health, and national security. With the goal of becoming a world-class leader and creating a lasting geospatial impact, SLU intends to hire strategically across the University in areas that directly intersect with the TGI. Enabled by the legacy gift supporting TGI, SLU has the opportunity to hire approximately 20 faculty across 3 years, marking our footprint as a world-class research University in geospatial science and adjacent fields while simultaneously multiplying our excellence in our teaching and our mission. This call for faculty positions is part of this exciting cluster hire initiative in geospatial science and adjacent fields.

About Civil Engineering

Saint Louis Universitys Civil Engineering Program invites applications for an open-rank faculty position in the area of transportation engineering with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2023. Qualified candidates will be considered for tenure. The program is seeking dynamic, collegial, collaborative, and creative applicants that are dedicated to performing ground-breaking, externally-funded research in the field of transportation engineering with the potential to build an exceptional national/international research reputation. Experience in the applications of geospatial science in transportation engineering is required, with a preference for expertise on geographic information systems, digital twin, smart cities, smart and connected communities, big data analytics and geovisualization, disaster response and network resiliency, or other related geospatial fields. The Saint Louis University civil engineering program is ABET accredited and offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees. The civil engineering program currently offers a graduate program in transportation engineering with a two-year cycle of course offerings: multimodal roadway safety, traffic engineering, urban transportation planning, and traffic simulation. The successful candidate will be expected to complement the existing transportation engineering graduate and research program and collaborate within the School of Science and Engineering and the TGI community. Applicants should also be motivated to deliver engaging, hands-on learning experiences to undergraduate and graduate engineering students in a team-oriented, student-focused environment.

Job Description and Primary Responsibilities:

Establish a vibrant and productive transportation engineering research program with an emphasis on geospatial science and actively engage in scholarly activities including publishing in peer reviewed journals, dissemination at conferences, and seeking external funding

Develop, deliver, and assess graduate-level courses that complement the current transportation engineering and geospatial course offerings

Develop, deliver, and assess civil engineering courses in support of the departments teaching mission

Contribute to the growth of the TGI through transportation engineering-related research and outreach

Create inclusive, engaging teaching and research experiences to develop socially conscious engineers and scientists

Mentor undergraduate and graduate students

Participate in departmental, school, university and professional service activities

Key Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field

Demonstrated excellence in research and scholarly activity, including peer reviewed journal and conference papers, grant writing, mentoring students, and developing an independent research agenda

Excellence in teaching as demonstrated through previous teaching and teaching preparation experiences

Desire to engage with SLUs mission-driven learning and outreach activities

Preferred Qualifications:

BS degree in civil engineering, or a closely related field.

Post-doctoral fellowship experience in transportation engineering or a related disciplinary area

Relevant teaching experience that promotes hands-on, experiential learning

Established record of interdisciplinary collaboration and impactful research work

Demonstrated ability and vision to collaborate and build a multidisciplinary initiative in pursuit of enhancing undergraduate and graduate education
