Description
The City of Detroit is seeking a highly organized, data savvy technologist interested with a passion for public service. This role will help ensure that our Open Data Portal (ODP) is user friendly and serves all public and departmental needs. The small and collaborative nature of the open data team will allow for an individual to participate in all aspects of this project related to design, build, procure, and deploy.
You will be required to work with City departments and partner organizations to understand their source systems, inventory their data, and help solve the technical and organizational challenges that will arise as we work to make the Citys data more transparent, timely, and accurate. You will work closely with other open data team members to inventory all available data and translate departmental business needs into actionable user stories that will guide improvements to the ODP.
Examples of Duties
Help research open data best practices to ensure we develop the best interface for our specific needs
Help communicate the transformational value of open data to stakeholders across the city departments
Collect and document all business requirements for the ODP
Help develop user stories and other design guidelines for the Open Data team to execute on
Inventory all departmental data suitable for publication and develop publication plans
Develop a clear project plan and track key performance metrics to ensure that project stays organized and on schedule
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors in computer science, data science, social science, information management, information science, database administration or other relevant field.
Experience working directly with data and engineering teams
Experience translating business requirements into actionable tasks
Experience managing large and complex projects with multiple stakeholders, preferably in government administration
Strong communication skills (written and oral) and attention to detail
Minimum tech skills:
Command of Office 365, Teams and Outlook or similar collaborative tools (e.g. Google Suite, Slack etc)
Experience with project management software (e.g.Trello, Smartsheet, etc.) and knowledge of project management best practices
Would be great if:
5+ years working as a Product Owner, Product Manager, Business Analyst or similar in the tech or governmental space
Knowledge of Python and/or SQL
Direct past experience building, designing or maintaining data warehouse and/or data stores
Direct experience working with relational data for analysis.
Knowledge of ArcGIS Pro or other geospatial data manipulation products.
Knowledge of Tableau or another BI tool
Familiarity with the City of Detroit
