Title: Geospatial Technician
Department: Biological Sciences Reports To: Assistant Professor
Position Type: Staff
Position Summary: We are seeking a Geospatial Technician to assist with planning, conducting, and coordinating in-lab and external GIS support of various research. The candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of multiple GIS tools for ecohydrological research. These tools will be used to facilitate multiple research projects to characterize and understand hydrologic controls on vegetation distribution and the dynamics and resilience of riparian vegetation across a range of spatial scales. In addition to these ongoing projects, the person will develop a lab tutorial using GRASS software for a GIS course and be in charge of documenting and archiving the software codes and datasets used in different research projects. The position will be full time for one year starting on July 1st and might be continued depending on funding availability and satisfying performance.
Essential Functions:
Developing GIS tools to process large spatial-temporal datasets.
Performing geospatial analyses on large volumes of spatial datasets
Maintain, document and archive software codes and datasets used in research.
Develop GIS lab course materials using open-source software
Pilot research on data collection and processing using drones.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
A Masters degree in geography or computer science with demonstrated experience
Fundamental understanding of geospatial data with expertise in ArcGIS software suite (ArcMap, ArcGIS server).
Familiarity with Open GIS such as GRASS and QGIS.
Expertise in raster and vector data processing workflows.
Ability to design, develop and manage geospatial databases.
Strong technical programming/scripting with Python, C++ and web developing languages, with solid experience in automated processing and analyzing, as well as geodatabase management.
Solid background in designing and implementing strategies for collection, analysis, storage, and display of large geographic data sets and in performing statistical data analysis.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, presentation skills, and demonstrated effectiveness communicating highly technical and scientific insights.
Experiences working with field work equipment, such as drone and SBC (Single Board Computer)
At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
