GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position performs digital conversion and the production of maps in support of the land and asset management systems utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) and applicable computer programs. Reports to a GIS or IT Project Manager.
There are two (2) levels of GIS Specialist distinguished by the level of work performed and the
qualifications of the employee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Responsible for implementation, development, and maintenance of GIS data. Assists the GIS team to facilitate the successful application of day to day GIS services including 3-D modeling, data analytics, drone piloting, programming and the full range of the ESRI GIS software suite. Prepares updates and creates new maps for special projects based on requests from City departments. Produces documentation and responds to requests for information or questions about data in the GIS system. Converts and updates land and infrastructure information from maps, aerial photographs, and field inspections to digital GIS using current GIS Software. Coordinates and makes updates to existing information in the GIS. Compares data in the GIS database with other systems and resolves conflicts. Maintains GIS assets as necessary to provide for the most up-to-date GIS as possible.
Assigns and maintains GIS layers as needed for the accurate retrieval of operation and maintenance assets and projects to include regulatory requirements from state and federal agencies; prepares map updates and creates new maps for special projects based on requests from various departments to include plat research, reconciliation and verification. Responds to requests for information or questions about the data in the GIS system; corrects information as needed.
Researches flood zone property locations within zones; maintains log of flood zone determinations issued to the public. Revises maps and prepares elevation certificates; maintains related correspondence with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Performs technical support work involving the updating of the GIS-Centric Infrastructure Asset Management System; researches information through computer retrieval from City and other files; performs field inspections to acquire and verify geographic data to create accurate maps.

Computer Skills Ability to utilize a personal computer with drafting and mapping programs as well as various computer peripherals such as printers, scanners, plotters, digitizers, and GPS equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GIS Technician Requires an Associates Degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering Technology, Information Systems, Drafting, or closely related field and 1 year of closely related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. GIS Specialist Requires an Associates Degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering Technology, Information Systems, Drafting, or closely related field and 2 4 years of closely related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires an acceptable background check to include a state and local criminal history check.

Requires satisfactory results from a Color Vision Test (CVT). Requires a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work.
Some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or work station. SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, and visual cures or signals.
