Description

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is offering a faculty fellowship.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will collaborate with a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to leverage expertise applying advanced techniques for analysis of geospatial data to conduct independent, unclassified research in collaboration with an NGA research mentor. You will develop a detailed research plan for your project, to include topic identification, research question specification, data collection, analysis and validation, and dissemination of research findings.

Where will I be located?
You will conduct unclassified research remotely (e.g., from a university facility), in collaboration with an NGA research mentor based at an NGA research facility.
What is the anticipated start date?
NGA is seeking to appoint the selected candidate during the summer of 2022 with the exact start date to be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will hold an earned doctoral degree in Computer, Information or Data Sciences, Earth and Geosciences or relevant academic discipline and be a current full-time faculty member at an accredited institution of higher education.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

Conceptualizing a broad research agenda and in independently planning and executing advanced academic research projects.
Research background in collection of spatiotemporal data capturing human or animal behaviors at fine spatial and temporal scales, and analysis of such data using map algebra, time-geography or other appropriate analytic techniques.
Ability and interest in collecting and analyzing georeferenced data made available by social media platforms.
Interest in leveraging applied machine learning techniques appropriate for the analysis of spatiotemporal data, to include Bayesian network analysis.
Advanced knowledge of GIS software and one or more modern scientific computing languages appropriate for analysis of large spatiotemporal datasets (Python, R, etc).

U.S. citizenship is required at the time of application.
