The Energy and Climate Resource Data Analyst will work with the Pittsburgh-based Subsurface Analysis Team supporting the efforts of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) towards the development of technologies related to geologic carbon storage, enhanced oil recovery, unconventional oil and gas operations, and produced water production and management. The candidate must apply sound principles and analytical capability to the area of energy-related subsurface analysis. The candidate may work independently or in a team setting, depending on the particular initiative.

Position Requirements:
Junior-Level Analyst Position Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Petroleum/Energy Engineering, Environmental Science or Engineering, Energy/Natural Resources Policy/Management or related discipline
Master’s degree is preferred
2+ year’s of working experience in a relevant field
The ability to gather, comprehend, and discuss pertinent data
Academic understanding of operations associated with conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration and production, carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2, EOR), or offshore oil and gas practices
Senior Level Analyst Position Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Petroleum/Energy Engineering, Environmental Science or Engineering, Energy/Natural Resources Policy/Management, or related discipline
Master’s Degree or PhD is preferred
5+ year’s of working experience in a relevant field
Experience in a Research and Development project environment
Extensive experience in both writing and presenting technical material generated from research efforts
Experience with oversight and management of staff and/or project budget
Possess the ability to lead projects, provide direction to team members and subcontractors, and communicate progress with federal clients
Desirable Skill Sets:
Familiarity with and applied use of machine learning frameworks (like Keras or TensorFlow), libraries (like scikit-learn), and data science principles
Familiarity with economic analysis concepts, particularly cash flow modeling and supply and demand
Familiarity with any aspects related to energy policy, regulations, or incentives; particularly in regards to carbon dioxide storage and decarbonization strategies
Experience with geospatial analysis tools (GIS), data analytics (Tableau), and /or programming languages (Python, Fortran, and Visual Basic)
Basic knowledge and understanding of one or several subsurface research pursuits led by NETL (e.g. National Risk Assessment Partnership, SMART Initiaitve, CarbonSAFE, Offshore Carbon Storage Partnerships, Unconventional O&G Field Labs)
Proficiency in technical writing ability and generating high-quality technical documents (i.e. reports, manuscripts for peer review, MS PowerPoint presentations)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications, especially with MS Excel and PowerPoint
Position Responsibilities (will vary depending on Junior/Senior Level)
Learn and be able to implement NETL-developed, publicly-available economic models pertaining to CO2 storage (FE/NETL Saline CO2 Storage Cost Model) and CO2 transportation (FE/NETL CO2 Transport Cost Model)
Collect, process, and assess large data sets related to subsurface energy systems
Handle and visualize spatial data with GIS-related software tools
Design and develop machine learning and deep learning systems and run data driven-based predictive models; applications include 3D CO2 storage systems and unconventional oil and gas development
Interact with federal clients as well as team subcontractors. In certain instances, be able to guide team members through project work plans
Compile study findings (including presentation of data) into publishable-quality deliverables
Prepare technical summary reports, graphs and tables, communication products, and articles based on research projects related to the subsurface energy systems
Travel (i.e., participate virtually under current remote working conditions) to technical conferences and meetings on occasion
Perform work as a consummate professional, capable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
