All About You

Under minimal administrative direction, the Director Communication, Research works collaboratively with the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI), and other Research Institutes (RI) leadership teams to create high-level communication and marketing pieces to support SLU researchs vision and mission. This position is a member of the Office of Vice President of Research communications team and works closely with the offices of Marketing and Communications, the Presidents Office, Development, and individual researchers at the university. The Communications Director, Research is also responsible for implementing a communications strategy that focuses on the research strategic priorities of the OVPR, TGI, and RI. Under direction of the Vice President for Research, the Director will lead a team of professionals committed to externally and internally elevating the scale and eminence of SLU research.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops, writes, and edits communications for various needs including content across digital, print and other channels (articles, newsletters, collateral, emails, presentations, talking points, website, social, etc.)

Develops and executes strategic communications plans focusing on increasing awards for SLUs Research Institute and achieving various goals and initiatives, leveraging a variety of internal communication channels external communications efforts to strengthen SLU research (e.g., OVPR, TGI, RI)

Engages internal PR teams to build external communications and promotions plans, partnering throughout all execution efforts

Maintains strong partnerships and collaboration with key constituents across the university including RI leads, TGI leads, SLU Faculty and Divisions, building consensus for communications plans and execution needs, and identifying promotional opportunities

Oversees and executes when needed, RI, TGI and/or other website content and strategy related to SLU Research, partners with internal Web and Social teams on overall strategy

Monitors and measures communications plans for effectiveness, proactively identifying optimization opportunities

Continuously innovates by staying informed of communication trends across the higher education industry

Develops and supports other communication efforts as needed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Teamwork and demonstrated ability to produce high-level written content, e.g., news releases, speech or letter writing, editorial writing, etc. about exciting developments related to SLU research

Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills

Analytical skills to develop and summarize the best strategies to convey a message

Creativity to produce exciting and interesting content

Organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize projects while working on a deadline or in a fast-paced environment

High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellence in management of large, organization-wide projects or initiatives

Personal qualities of integrity, professionalism, good judgment, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to service and treating others with respect.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree or advanced degree in or equivalent professional experience in a field related to in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field with at least five years of work experience preferred in public relations, marketing, advancement, and/or media relations operation.
