Description of Work Unit

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Position Summary

A Database and Geographic Information (GIS) Specialist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. This position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area on Hawaii Island, Hawaii.

The Specialist designs, constructs, implements, and maintains program and project-specific databases. The position also tests databases, implements backup systems, and develops processes to verify data integrity. The Specialist develops user interfaces and documentation/SOPs, creates reports and queries, ensures data quality, implements database recovery, and ensures data security. The Specialist will perform GIS tasks to include geodatabase creation and management, GIS file structure management, developing/maintaining metadata consistent with federal standards, cartography and spatial analyses, and developing/maintaining applications to collect geospatial data in the field (primarily using ArcGIS Collector and Survey 123). The Specialist performs Information Technology (IT) tasks to include installing and updating software, assisting with hardware procurement and hardware and software configuration, assisting with server and IT network infrastructure, and administrating ArcGIS Enterprise.

Required Job Qualifications

BS/BA in geography, geographic information systems, natural resources management, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related field.
Three years of experience with information management and design of relational databases including concepts of database normalization, logical and conceptual models, relational database design standards, database management practices.
Demonstrated ability with developing applications in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or similar programming language.
Three years of professional experience with GIS management/application.
Proficient user of Esris ArcGIS software suite, including ArcGIS Enterprise/ArcGIS Online.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and write complex structured query language (SQL) queries, establish standards and best practices for SQL.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Must have a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license by the employment start date.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

MS/MA in geography, geographic information systems, natural resources management, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related field.
Professional GIS Certification.
Experience with managing natural resource management data.
Experience developing/managing applications to collect geospatial data in the field.
Experience with image processing and raster analysis (e.g., land cover and vegetation, fire).
Experience with computer network administration, including network architecture of a stand-alone local area network, personal computer and laptop maintenance.
Experience with federal GIS metadata standards.
Experience working on a military installation or organization.
