How to Create 3D Elevation Profiles in QGIS
Step 1: Load Your LiDAR Data
You can create elevation profiles in QGIS with vector, raster, mesh and point cloud layers. For the purposes of this tutorial we assume that you are working with LiDAR data.
To get started, you need to add your LiDAR data into QGIS. Begin by opening QGIS and navigating to the data source manager to load your LiDAR file.
Step 2: Access the Elevation Profile Tool
Once your data is loaded, go to the View menu and select Elevation Profile. This will open a new panel where you can create profiles from your LiDAR data.
Step 3: Capture a Curve for the Profile
To create an elevation profile, click the Capture a Curve button in the panel. Draw a line on the map where you want to analyze the elevation. Right-click to finish drawing the line, and you’ll see the elevation profile displayed below.
Step 4: Adjust Point Symbols
You can customize the appearance of the points on your profile. By default, the point style is set to square. You can change it to a circle or adjust the size to better visualize the data.
Step 5: Modify Tolerance Settings
The Tolerance setting controls how many points are included in your profile. Adjusting this value can help you visualize different aspects of the terrain. For instance, setting it to 1 meter will show fewer points, while increasing it to 100 meters will include more data points.
Step 6: Create a Profile from a Feature
If you want to create a profile from an existing line feature, first create a temporary scratch layer and draw your desired line. After saving your edits, use the Capture a Curve from a Feature option to pull in the profile based on that line.
Step 7: Adjust Symbology for Better Visualization
To enhance your profile’s appearance, you can adjust the symbology. Options include classifying the data by attributes or applying color ramps based on intensity or elevation values.
Step 8: Analyze Your Elevation Profile
With your profile created, you can analyze the terrain features. Observe how changes in the point return numbers can help distinguish between ground and vegetation.
