Cities and towns within a radius

Find cities and towns within a radius within a radius on a map and export the data for free!

The Location Finder is an interactive mapping tool that helps you discover cities, towns and villages within a specified radius of any clicked location. Using OpenStreetMap data, it provides detailed information about populated places including their distance from your selected point and population data when available.

How to Use

Selecting a Location

  • Simply click anywhere on the map to set your search center point
  • A blue circle will appear showing your search area

Adjusting Search Parameters

  • Use the “Search Radius” input to set how far to search (from 0.1 to 50)
  • Choose between kilometers or miles using the “Units” dropdown
  • The search updates automatically when you change these settings

Understanding Results

  • Results appear in the right panel, sorted by distance from your clicked point
  • Each result shows:
    • Location name
    • Type (city, town or village)
    • Distance from your selected point
    • Population (when data is available)
  • Hover over a result to highlight its location on the map

Exporting Data

  • Click “Export GeoJSON” to download the search results
  • The exported file includes all location data including coordinates and properties
  • This format is compatible with most GIS software

Technical Details

  • Uses real-time OpenStreetMap data
  • Searches for official “place” designations (towns and villages)
  • Maximum search radius: 50 units (kilometres or miles)
  • Exports in standard GeoJSON format for compatibility

Tips

  • For best results, zoom in to your area of interest before clicking
  • The tool works worldwide but data completeness may vary by region
  • Allow a few seconds for results to load after clicking or changing parameters
  • If no results appear, try increasing the search radius or selecting a different location
