How Alaska compares nationwide

Across all 50 states and DC, the USGS lists 68,708 named summits. Alaska accounts for 4.3% of them. Alaska has the 1st-tallest peak of any US state — a position shaped by its highest ridges. Alaska contains 20 named “14ers” — peaks at or above 14,000 ft — one of only four states to host any.

How this map was built

Peak locations: the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) Domestic Names file, filtered to Summit-class features in Alaska. Elevations: reverse-elevated against the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) point query service. A small number of summits lack 3DEP coverage and show “Not available” in their popups.
